Mental health disorders are more common among veterans and there are often issues with access to resources. After returning home, these veterans may be forced to cope with Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Suicidal Ideations, and other conditions as a result of their service to their country. Nurses are on the front line of this mental health battle and are in a unique position to advocate for the mental health of veterans and their families. This course is mandated by the state of West Virginia for nursing professionals.

Course Objectives

After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

  1. Understand the importance of screening for mental health disorders in Veterans and their family members.  
  2. Understand the importance of support and encouragement from healthcare providers in supporting Veterans and their family members in dealing with mental health disorders. 
  3. Summarize the signs and symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder and how the severity of the disorder is diagnosed.  
  4. Identify Depressive Disorder and the signs and symptoms related to it. 
  5. Summarize the definition of PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and the treatments involved. 
  6. Summarize the definition of Bipolar Disorder and the signs and symptoms of a manic episode. 
  7. Understand the treatment related to Bipolar Disorder and the scale used to assess the severity of the disorder. 
  8. Understand the severity of suicidal ideation and the signs and symptoms to recognize of someone who may be thinking of suicide. 
  9. Articulate the role grief plays on Veterans and their family members with loss because of their time in the military.
