It has been said that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This adage holds more true in asthma than most conditions. Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic illnesses in children. Millions of hospital admissions, primary care office appointments, and missed school days each year are directly related to asthma. Preventing asthma-triggering events and practicing continuous maintenance therapies can significantly reduce the amount of disruption in a child’s life due to asthma symptoms. In this course, we will explore the asthma disease process, triggers, and common therapeutic management with particular focus on prevention strategies for asthma exacerbation.

In this course, we will explore the asthma disease process, triggers, and common therapeutic management with particular focus on prevention strategies.

Course Objectives: At the completion of this course the learner will be able to:

  1. Understand the asthma disease process and common causes of asthma exacerbation.
  2. Identify high-risk populations and situations that may increase a child’s risk for asthma exacerbation.
  3. Recognize frequently used asthma medications, mechanism of action, and side effects of the medications.
  4. Describe asthma exacerbation prevention strategies.

This course will take the average learner 150 minutes to complete and awards 3 contact hours of continuing education.

Renee is a pediatric nurse practitioner with extensive experience working with pediatrics in a range of settings. She graduated from Saint Louis University and currently works with a pediatric urology group in St. Louis. She has previously worked with critically ill children as a PICU staff nurse.
