As nurses across the country battle against staffing shortages, burnout, and an all-time high of demands and strains on the overall healthcare system, little time is left for sifting through new rules and requirements for license renewal!
For Michigan nurses whose licenses expire during a chaotic 2021, a lapse in licensure not only means a potentially big headache dealing with the Michigan Board of Nursing, but also additional fees and continuing education requirements.
That’s why our Nursing CE Central team has a full breakdown of top questions, deadlines, requirements, and consequences of missing your Michigan RN license renewal deadline for the 2021 renewal period.
If you miss your license renewal deadline, you have 60 days to renew it without having to go through the relicensure process.
1. How can I renew my license this year?
Michigan nurses can renew their license online by logging into the MiPLUS renewal portal at http://www.michigan.gov/MiPLUS.
2. Is there a COVID-19 related grace period if I miss my renewal deadline?
No, there are currently no COVID related grace periods or requirement waivers listed with the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. However, Michigan nurses do have a standard, 60-day grace period for renewal.
If you miss your license renewal deadline, you have 60 days to renew it without having to go through the relicensure process. The 60-day grace period comes with an additional $20 late fee.
3. What happens if I don’t renew my license before its current expiration date?
Michigan nurses have a 60-day grace period if they miss their renewal deadline, in which they can renew their license without having to go through the relicensure process. The 60-day grace period comes with an additional $20 late fee.
If a nurse does not renew during their regular renewal period, or during the 60-day grace period, then a relicensure is required. Unlike the regular renewal process, the relicensure process requires that a nurse submit proof of completed continuing education requirements, and pay an additional $70 to $100 in renewal fees.
4. What do I need to have ready when starting my renewal online with the Michigan BON?
Most nurses will only need fulfilled continuing education requirements, along with a valid method of payment, to complete their renewal through the online, Michigan licensing platform. Payment with a Visa, Mastercard, or Discover credit or debit card is required. American Express is not accepted.
5. What are the 2021 CE requirements for renewal?
In order to ensure that your Michigan RN license renewal goes through, nurses must complete 25 hours of continuing education, two of which must be on pain and pain symptom management, in order to renew their nursing license.
6. Can I renew now, and complete my CEUs later?
No. The Michigan Board of Nursing requires that all continuing education requirements be met at the time of renewal. Nurses must attest to having fulfilled all continuing education requirements before the final submission of their online renewal form.
7. How can I check that my renewal application is complete?
Verification that your Michigan RN license renewal is complete will be available through the MiPLUS portal in about 24 hours after submitting your renewal application. Nurses can find this verification under the ‘Home’ tab of the MiPLUS portal by selecting the ‘My Records’ subtab and confirming that a new expiration date is listed next to licensing information.
8. How long must I keep documentation proving that I completed my 2021 CE requirements for renewal?
The Michigan Board of Nursing does not require nurses to submit proof of completion of continuing education (CE) during the regular renewal process. Nurses are required to maintain their own records of CE completion for a minimum of four years.
The Board conducts random audits after each renewal period, where randomly selected nurses will be notified that they must submit evidence of having earned their required, renewal CEs. This evidence regularly comes in the form of CE certificate copies.
