Ischemic stroke remains the fifth leading cause of death in the United States. Stroke care has become increasingly complex in recent years with the addition of interventional techniques that can remove clotting in the brain. Prior to these newer thrombectomy procedures, ischemic stroke patients had medical treatment or the time-sensitive administration of intravenous “clot buster” drugs with IV alteplase (TPA). Nurses play a vital role in stroke care, including assessment, knowledge of new protocols, and overall treatment plan. Those of us who are dedicated to the care of these patients at all levels must maintain competency whether the patient is acutely ill in the emergency room, intensive care unit, post-stroke unit, rehabilitation, or at home recovering. The best practice standards of stroke care are applicable in any unit the patient may be located.
